Bike Month Commuter Challenge

The month long Bike Commuter Challenge is back again with plenty of opportunities to get out and ride! Sign up as a team or individual to participate. Log at least five trips during the month of May and be entered to win great prizes including a $200 REI gift certificate, bike tune-ups, light sets and team pizza parties. A $100 REI gift certificate will be awarded to the man, woman, and college student who logged the most cycling miles in the month of May. Your college, university, or place of employment must be located in Pierce County in order to participate.

Zeit Bike: Letterpress Ride/Seek
THURSDAY, MAY 17th 5-8PM
Tacoma Art Museum, 1701 Pacific Ave, Tacoma, WA
Local artists, including Beautiful Angle, Wayzgoose, and Stadium High School students, will unveil letterpress posters inspired by spokes, frames, and chains. Also view “Bill Cunningham New York,” a documentary about the Schwinn-riding photographer behind the NYTimes weekly “On the Street Fashion.” Showings begin at 5:00 and 6:30 PM. Admission is free as part of Third Thursday.
Outside the Boundaries: Beginning Mountain Bike Ride

You’ve heard the stories and seen the movies, now you can live the ride on this excursion for women cyclists new to mountain biking. Meet at Tacoma Bike-Proctor to carpool to Banner Forest, a combination rural-urban trail that is perfect for learning to bunnyhop and manual!

Bike to a Better Tacoma
THURSDAY, MAY 24th 4:30-6:30PM
The Hub, 203 Tacoma Ave S, Tacoma, WA
Join with fellow bicyclists and City staff members to talk about hopes, visions and plans for a more bike-able Tacoma. Meet members of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Action Committee and get updates on implementation of the Mobility Master Plan. If you bike to the Hub, grab a free slice of pizza, and be entered into a drawing for gift certificates to the Hub and REI prizes. Plus, witness Tacoma’s only valet bike parking!

Smart Commuting Workshop

Commuting by bike is unlike any other commute! Come to this workshop to learn how to be smart about it. Bring questions about following the cycling rules of the road, being more visible to motorists, and tips to make it more enjoyable!

ReCycle The Bike Night: Clips of Faith

Come down to celebrate Tacoma’s first Bike Corral! The Red Hot and New Belgium present ReCYCLE The Bike Night. Catch Clips of Faith, a collection of bike-centric home spun independent short films. Be entered to win prizes, including a custom-made cruiser! This event is 21+ only.
Tour de Pierce Bike Ride
SUNDAY, JUNE 24th 7:30AM-2:30PM
Meet at the Gold Parking Lot of the Western Washington Fairgrounds, 110 9th Ave SW, Puyallup, WA
Tour de Pierce is a summer bicycle ride through central Pierce County for fitness and fun, promoting bicycle awareness and safety. Choose from the following:
- The 12-mile route provides a flat, easy ride suitable for families and novice riders
- The 30-mile loop extends the ride past farms, flower fields, and more scenic views of Pierce County’s waterwars and Mt. Rainier
- The 50-mile course travels through parts of Puyallup, Sumner, South Prairie and Orting

2011 Bike Month Recap
Bike Month 2011 was a great success! We saw participation double in the Bike Swap and the Commuter Challenge and a robust list of community partners sponsored and hosted bicycling events throughout May. Thank you to the many cyclists who participated, we hope to see you out on the roads year-round and back again at Bike Month events in 2012!
