Share the Ride – CARPOOL
Carpooling is one of the most flexible and convenient ways to share the ride. Simply find at least one other person who shares a similar commute with you, determine a driving schedule, develop a few ground rules and you are on your way!
For many, carpooling provides the most flexible alternative to driving alone. Carpools can be as varied as the people who form them. One person may do all the driving with riders contributing to the cost of the commute or the commuters may share driving and not exchange money. Plenty of people are willing to share your ride and the costs.
Carpooling is convenient, cost effective and easy. You make the carpool suit your needs — whether it's comfort, reduced travel time, money savings or only once or twice a week.
How do I find a carpool partner?
Finding riders is easy. Contact your co-workers. Talk to neighbors. Use posters in your car window or work bulletin board. Or visit Rideshareonline.com and do your own internet matching. RideshareOnline is a ridematching service offered throughout Washington State. The service is free and confidential.
Should our carpool set rules?
Your carpool will operate smoothly if you establish a few rules in advance. For example, decide on policies about smoking, the radio, waiting times and driving rotation. Agree on vacation plans and notification about absences. A few minutes now will save time and headaches later.
Should I charge the other riders?
If each person in the carpool takes a turn driving, don't charge anything. If only one person drives, charge each rider a reasonable fare. Only you can determine what constitutes a reasonable fare. But, remember that there are more expenses than just gasoline. Each rider should be expected to pay for a share of the gasoline, oil, service, insurance and "wear and tear" items. Check out the commute calendar for an idea how much you are spending on commute costs.
Do I need car insurance?
It's the law. You need insurance for your car and for your passengers. Check with your insurance agent to make sure that you have adequate coverage.
