JOIN THE GROUP - VANPOOL
Why put miles on your personal car, when you can put them on a transit-owned van? Groups of five or more people pay monthly fares that cover gas, insurance, maintenance and even 24-hour roadside assistance.
Washington State has more public vanpools than anywhere in the country. Vanpools eliminate more than 12,400 vehicles every day from the region's crowded roadways, reducing single-lane traffic by about 6.3 hours during each commute period.
Vanpool Information
A vanpool is a group of 5 to 15 sharing the ride in a van provided by a transit agency. Transit agencies own, maintain, manage, insure and license the van. Each vanpool needs a volunteer driver, back-up driver and a bookkeeper, and a minimum of 5 riders. You don’t have to all work at the same place, but it helps to have start and end points that are near other riders.
Get Started
You can start a new vanpool by applying through Pierce Transit or another regional agency. To find riders, talk to co-workers or hang the Riders Wanted flyer in your workplace.
Or, you can join an existing vanpool by contacting the driver.
RideshareOnline.com can also help you hook up with all regional vans operating in your area based on your work schedule and location.
Vanpool Cost
Your vanpool fare covers all operating costs, including gas, insurance, maintenance, and 24 hour support. Check the Pierce Transit Fare Sheet to get an idea of the fare based off your round-trip miles and number of riders in the van. Some employers offer a subsidy or reimbursement for fares, many employers who provide ORCA cards cover the entire fare. Check with your employer to find out what kinds of benefits they provide employees.
