Where do you work and what is your role in the company?
City of University Place, Finance Director/Risk Manager
How far is your commute? How long does it take you each way? If you are teleworking, how long would your commute have been if you were commuting to the office?
35.5 miles It takes 45 min to 1 hr+ each way.
What is your commute mode and what made you decide to commute this way?
When we first moved to Grapeview in 2018 my husband and I began to carpool together each day to save money. During COVID shutdowns I worked from home every day. I now carpool 2 days a week to the office and work remotely 3 days a week.
What do you enjoy about your commute (or teleworking)?
Telework has given me a greater work-life balance. During the summer I now spend what would normally be my commute time kayaking with a few neighbors early each morning to watch the sunrise and "solve the worlds problems" over a cup of coffee. I start my day refreshed and happy. I'm able to take care of small household chores on my lunch hour so my evenings are more relaxed. In winter months I am able to exercise or get some reading in before starting my work day. I have been able to get to know my neighbors!
Do you have any interesting stories from your commute?
Much of our commute is in a rural area so we are always keeping a close eye on the side of road for deer. On our way home one day we saw movement, slowed down and had to wait while a bear crossed the road.
Do you think you save money by commuting this way?
Most definitely! I am always amazed when I see the stats provided on my Pierce Trips Calendar page.
How does your company help accommodate your commute option? (ex: bike racks, free bus pass, vanpool subsidy, flexible work hours, telework incentives, etc.)
Ability to work remotely and flexible work hours.
Is there anything your company could do better to accommodate your commute option?
I have to drive myself on days when I have medical or other appointments. It would be great if there was a vehicle available for use for these short local trips.
What would you say to your fellow employees to inspire them to try using a commute option other than driving alone in their car?
Reducing your daily commute can give you a chance to enjoy more: More time in the year, more days with your loved ones, and more money saved each week.
